Calancan Beach
Calancan Beach was unlike any other beach I have known. Its long causeway, open water, shifting sand, coconut husks, and muddy shoreline created a landscape that felt wild, unusual, and full of possibility. Sunday trips there became an important part of life at Marcopper.
The beach encouraged imagination and adventure. Pieces of driftwood became forts, trails drawn in the sand became roads, and the soft areas of shoreline—what we called “sinkspots”—became places to explore. There were fires on the beach, meals cooked outdoors, windsurfing, makeshift surfing, and long walks along the causeway. Even the mud, wind, waves, and changing weather became part of its character.
Looking back, Calancan Beach represents the freedom of those years. It was a place where the surroundings provided everything needed for an entire day of discovery and play. It may not have been a traditional picture-perfect beach, but that was part of what made it so memorable. Calancan remains one of the places that most strongly captures the adventurous spirit of my life on Marinduque.
