The Island of Marinduque

Marinduque in the early 1980s felt like a world of its own. Surrounded by the sea and shaped by mountains, coconut-covered hills, small towns, beaches, rivers, and winding roads, the island offered a remarkable variety of places within a relatively small area. It was quiet and largely rural, with a pace of life far removed from that of a large city.

For a young person, Marinduque seemed filled with possibilities. The beaches, golf course, swimming pool, trails, villages, and open countryside became places to explore and make discoveries. Even an ordinary trip across the island could feel like an adventure. The changing weather, tropical landscape, and close connection between land and sea gave everyday life a character that was completely its own.

Looking back, Marinduque was more than the setting for these memories. It shaped the freedom, curiosity, and sense of adventure that defined those years. It was a place where friendships grew, imagination flourished, and simple experiences became unforgettable. Although my time there represented only a small part of my life, the island left an impression that has never faded. Marinduque will always remain one of the places I think of as home.
