The Swimming Pool at Marcopper

The swimming pool at Marcopper was far more than simply a place to swim. Set near the clubhouse and golf course, it became one of the central gathering places of my life on Marinduque—a familiar setting where ordinary afternoons could turn into hours of imagination, freedom, and fun.

The diving board, the deep water, the warm pavement on sunny days, and the sound of voices beneath the surface are all lasting parts of the memory. Swimming during a tropical rainstorm was especially unforgettable: looking up from underwater as the rain struck the surface made the pool feel like its own small world.

It was a place to be active, inventive, and completely absorbed in the moment. The games were often created as we went along, and the pool seemed to offer endless possibilities. Looking back, it represents much of what made my years at Marcopper so special—the freedom of youth, a strong sense of community, and the joy of growing up in a place unlike anywhere else.
